The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) awarded MountainView Hospital the 2018 Heroes of Infection Prevention Award. MountainView Hospital is one of six to be awarded and is recognized under the Process and Systems Improvement category.
Since early 2015, the Infection Prevention and Quality Management departments at MountainView Hospital created processes to reduce hospital acquired conditions with an emphasis on Clostridium difficile (C. diff).
A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevent (CDC) states C. diff caused almost half a million infections among patients in the United States in a single year.
In the United States, approximately 29,000 patients died within 30 days of the initial diagnosis of C. diff. Of those patients, about 15,000 deaths were estimated to be directly caused by C. diff infections. C. diff is deemed a very important cause of infectious disease death in the United States.
Using evidence-based guidelines, the MountainView team developed a C. diff testing algorithm designed to prevent unnecessary and duplicative C. diff testing. The algorithm was disseminated to all healthcare workers in the facility and medical staff leadership support for the project and appropriate testing was clear.
The appropriateness of C. diff testing at MountainView has greatly improved and the facility’s C. diff rate dropped from 1.78 standardized infection ratio in 2015 to 0.56 in mid-2016.
“At MountainView, we make it a top priority to take the proper measures to provide the best quality of care and safety of our patients,” said Jeremy Bradshaw, Chief Executive Officer of MountainView Hospital. “Thanks to the dedication of our Infection Prevention and Quality Management departments, this award demonstrates we have succeeded in making a huge difference in infection prevent at our facility.”
Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) is the leading professional association for infection preventionists with more than 15,000 members. The APIC mission is to create a safer world through the prevention of infection.
Each year, APIC recognizes members for the development and application of innovative infection prevention programs by presenting the Heroes of Infection Prevention Award. These individuals and teams are at the frontline of infection prevention and are dedicated to producing innovative programs to help save lives.
