MountainView Hospital is hosting its annual Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The family-friendly all-ages event, located on the hospital’s northwest parking lot at the corner of Cheyenne Avenue and Tenaya Way, will raise awareness for safe bicycle riding.

The MountainView Bike Rodeo will feature Las Vegas pro BMX rider Ricardo Laguna, who will be on site to perform BMX demonstrations throughout the event. A children’s bike course will be available for younger attendees to test their skills. Hundreds of helmets will be given away and are only available until they are gone.

“Less than half of all children wear bike helmets, and teenagers even fewer,” said Jeremy Bradshaw, MountainView Hospital Chief Executive Officer. “Events like this, where we can provide a fun event for our community while also promoting safe practices, are one of the ways we’re able to initiate the changes needed to keep our children safe.”

Every day, emergency centers like the one at MountainView Hospital treat brain trauma from bicycle-related accidents. In the majority of those cases, a bike helmet could have drastically mitigated the injury. According to the Centers for Disease Control, roughly half of the more than half-million annual bicycle-related injuries in the U.S. are attributed to children and adolescents under the age of 20.

The 2018 Mountainview Bike Rodeo is in its third year of operation. The event is presented by MountainView Hospital and HCA Healthcare, Jaguar | Land Rover Las Vegas and Ricardo Laguna with sponsors including AMR/MedicWest, Armed Forces Chamber of Commerce, CareNow Urgent Care, CCSD Police, CCSD-Safe Routes to School, Nevada Highway Patrol, Regional Transportation Commission, Southern Nevada Bicycling Coalition and Zero Teen Fatalities.
