Las Vegas, NV April 8, 2016 — MountainView Hospital announced today it received accreditation for its General Surgery Residency Program from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

The MountainView Hospital / University of Nevada School of Medicine General Surgery Residency Program will have 28 positions. Surgery residents, post-graduate years 1-4, will have an anticipated start date of June 27, 2016. The residents will rotate at MountainView Hospital and at Sunrise Hospital. The Surgery residents will rotate to Sunrise and Sunrise Children’s Hospital for their trauma, surgical critical care and pediatric surgery experience.

ACGME is a private, non-profit organization that evaluates and accredits graduate medical education (GME) programs. Specialized training in General Surgery GME residency programs takes place over a five year period. Residency is the final phase of a long educational process, required for a physician to practice medicine, and is most influential in determining where a physician eventually practices.

“With the accreditation of our General Surgery Residency Program, we continue to demonstrate our commitment to the community and to post-graduate medical education,” said Chris Mowan, MountainView Hospital Chief Executive Officer. “As we continue to expand MountainView’s Graduate Medical Education program to include additional specialties, such as OB-GYN, Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine, we will significantly impact the number of residency spots available for physicians to continue their training in Nevada, or return to Nevada upon completion of medical school.”

The General Surgery Residency Program accreditation marks an important milestone for MountainView Hospital’s Graduate Medical Education department and is the second accreditation for a residency program received by the hospital. MountainView Hospital received accreditation September 2015 for its Internal Medicine Residency program and recently announced the inaugural class of 20 PGY-1 (post-graduate year 1) and 20 PGY-2 (post-graduate year 2) Internal Medicine Residents.

“MountainView has some of the highest qualified surgeons in the state in a wide variety of specialties. By establishing a general surgery residency program, we will be helping to train the next generation of surgeons,” said General Surgery Residency Program Director Dr. Paul W. Nelson. “Our vision is to offer an exceptional training environment that prepares surgical residents to practice using the highest standards.”

Nevada currently ranks 48th in the nation in the number of physicians per capita, at 218 physicians per 100,000 of the population, according to a 2012 study by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The national average is 307. Historically there have not been enough residency programs to meet the demand of medical students graduating from Nevada’s medical schools. Providing residency programs to retain and attract new physicians is integral to increasing the physician base in the state.
