Bike Safety – Wearing A Helmet
The Risks of Going Without a Helmet
- Only 48% of bike riders ages 5-14 wear a helmet. Older children are less likely to wear helmets than younger.
- Out of the estimated 515,000 bicycle-related injuries that required emergency care, roughly half were children and adolescents under 20.
- Each year, about 26,000 children and adolescents suffer from traumatic brain injuries from bicycle injuries/accidents.
- 97% of those who died in a bicycle incident were not wearing a helmet.
Why You Should Wear a Helmet
- Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of a head injury by 50%
- Bike helmets absorb the force of a crash and protect your brain
- Many helmets are affordable with a cost under $20
Choosing the Right Helmet
- Bike helmets should be replaced every five years or as soon as they are damaged or involved in an accident.
- Helmet should fit snugly before the straps are tightened. Choose a size that fits as snugly as possible while not being uncomfortably tight.
- Look for a helmet with a Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS).
