Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium Celebrates Inaugural Anesthesiology Resident Class Graduation

Las Vegas, NV  — Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education (GME) Consortium proudly recognizes the inaugural Class of 2021 Anesthesiology Residents.

The inaugural graduating class of six anesthesiologists is the first group to be trained exclusively in Nevada. Upon graduation, the graduating residents can sit for the medical board exams and upon successful completion, and begin providing care to our communities, or continue additional training through fellowships.

“Our graduates have been model physicians and have represented not only the program, but Nevada in their work,” says Dr. Jon Halling, Sunrise Health GME Consortium Anesthesiology Program Director. “From organizing the program to serving the patient population, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, they have worked long hours and safely guided patients through one of the most challenging times one can encounter.”

As a graduate of the inaugural class of the only anesthesiology residency program in Nevada, Dr. Courtney Steichen will be announced as the first graduate followed by her five classmates. Her colleagues unanimously agreed Dr. Steichen deserved to be recognized as the first graduate for being the ideal representative of this inaugural class and exemplifying the spirit of the program.

“I am thrilled to see how the graduate medical education programs continue to grow and evolve,” says Julie Taylor, MountainView Hospital Chief Executive Officer. “We are very proud of each graduating class, and grateful that the first class of anesthesiology residents has demonstrated such leadership and promise.”

The Sunrise Health GME Consortium Anesthesiology Residency Program began in July 2018 with six residents. Anesthesiology residents are presented with robust, in-depth training at MountainView Hospital, Sunrise Hospital, Sunrise Children’s Hospital, Southern Hills Hospital, Southern Nevada VA Health System, and pain specialist clinics that provide access to a wide variety of medical conditions and treatments associated with pain.

MountainView Hospital launched its Graduate Medical Education program in 2015 with the accreditation of its Internal Medicine Residency Program from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Since that time, MountainView Hospital, Southern Hills Hospital and Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center received approval from the ACGME to join forces under the Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium, and continued to receive accreditation for General Surgery, Family Medicine, OB-GYN, Transitional Year, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, Radiology Diagnostics, Neurology and four fellowship programs, Addiction Medicine, Critical Care Anesthesiology, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, and Gastroenterology.

ACGME is a private, non-profit organization that evaluates and accredits graduate medical education (GME) programs. Residency is the final phase of a long educational process, required for a physician to practice medicine, and is most influential in determining where a physician eventually practices.
