MountainView Hospital was recently recognized by the March of Dimes for its commitment to zero elective deliveries under 39 weeks for the past four years.
The continuing effort is part of the March of Dimes “Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait” campaign, which works to educate and encourage hospitals, physicians and patients not to schedule elective deliveries before 39 weeks.
The 39-week milestone is important; babies continue to grow and develop during the last few weeks of pregnancy. Major organs, like the brain, lungs and liver are still growing. Eyes and ears are developing and babies are learning to suck and swallow.
The March of Dimes reports that in the past two decades, the United States has seen a 30 percent increase in preterm birth (before 37 weeks gestation).
“We take our commitment to healthy babies and healthy moms very seriously,” said Jeremy Bradshaw, MountainView Hospital Chief Executive Officer. “We have a hard stop on elective, or non-medically indicative, deliveries prior to 39 weeks, and work to educate would-be parents on the importance of healthy, full-term babies.”
MountainView Hospital has a variety of parent education classes to help new parents, including a birthing education classes, Daddy 101 and sibling classes and a breast feeding class. To learn more and see a full list of our classes, visit mountainview-hospital.com/service/childbirth-classes.
