MountainView Hospital May 20, 2016

Las Vegas, NV MAY 14, 2016 — MountainView Hospital, along with its partner Land Rover Las Vegas, gave away hundreds of helmets Saturday, May 14 and educated the community about bicycle and helmet safety to an estimated 500 people in attendance throughout the event.

Additional outreach partners included: the Regional Transportation Commission, Las Vegas Metro and Nevada Highway Patrol, Las Vegas Cyclery, Whole Foods Market, Babies R Us/Toys R Us and professional BMX rider Ricardo Laguna.

The goal of the family-fun event was to distribute properly fitted helmets to children and educate about bicycle safety.

Studies show that less than half of Americans who ride bicycles wear helmets. A national survey conducted in 2001-2003 found that only 48 percent of children ages 5-14 years wore bicycle helmets when riding. Further, older children were less likely to wear helmets than younger children, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

The CDC reports that in 2010 in the U.S., 800 bicyclists were killed and an estimated 515,000 sustained bicycle-related injuries that required emergency department care. Roughly half of these cyclists were children and adolescents under the age of 20. Annually, 26,000 of these bicycle-related injuries to children and adolescents are traumatic brain injuries treated in emergency departments.

“If our efforts this weekend help save even one person future trauma due to a bike accident, we were successful in our mission,” said Chris Mowan, MountainView CEO.

In addition to bicycle safety, children’s bikes were raffled off for free, kid’s navigated a bike course and the crowd was wowed by the high-flying tricks of professional BMX rider Ricardo Laguna and team.
