The number one killer of women in the United States is Heart Disease. In fact, more women than men die of heart attacks every year. Given these statistics, MountainView Hospital is committed to educating women about the importance of keeping their hearts healthy.

Symptoms

Although heart attacks in both men and women it is important to know that symptoms may vary among men and women. Most commonly men experience symptoms that include chest pain, jaw pain, pain that travels down one or both arms, sweating, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting or indigestion. However, women often experience a variety of different heart attack symptoms which include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Weakness
  • Unusual fatigue
  • Nausea / indigestion / pressure in the upper abdomen
  • Dizziness
  • Back pain
  • Lower chest discomfort

Risk Factors

When dealing with heart disease there are risk factors that can and cannot be controlled.

Uncontrollable Risk Factors

  • Family history
  • Age - women post menopause
  • Ethnicity - a higher likelihood exists if you are African American, Hispanic, or Native American

Controllable Risk Factors

  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Physical inactivity
